Being very health conscious as we entered our mid to late sixties we did a lot of searching around and stumbled on detox smoothies and this heavy metal detox smoothie recipe was the starting point. But you want to know how to get rid of heart burn naturally and fast, so here we go…

Just knowing that by simply existing in this world you are exposed to toxins in our food, our water, and the air we breathe we were very keen to give it a go because we knew that living a long healthy and happy life meant eliminating as many toxins as we could.

At the time we started drinking a daily detox smoothie I was having the occasional episode of heartburn – maybe 2 or 3 times per month. It would creep up on me slowly and then bang! The most painful, middle of the chest circle of pain that would last for hours (sometimes up to 8 hours!). 

The type of pain that doesn’t allow sleep and nothing I did would ease the pain.

Apple cider vinegar and honey mixed with hot water was my go-to remedy initially and I would drink cup after cup of this mixture until the pain went away. So, I don’t really know if this worked or if it was just a time thing.

It certainly didn’t stop the heartburn from returning sometime in the future

Anyway, back to the smoothie. I’d been drinking a smoothie like the one I referred to earlier every morning for maybe 3 months and the ingredients evolved over time. 

One day I realized that I hadn’t had a single heart burn attack, and 15 months later I still haven’t. 

I’m not a scientist and I have no idea which ingredients work, and which don’t so here it is;

  • Water (enough to cover the ingredients in your blender) 150 mls?
  • ½ banana, frozen
  • ½ small apple
  • 6 blueberries
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of psyllium
  • ½ teaspoon of ground flax seed
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder
  • ½ teaspoon cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon Atlantic dulse
  • ½ teaspoon of barley grass powder
  • ½ teaspoon of spirulina
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of coconut oil
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of almond butter
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of brain food (keep the ol’ brain sharp!)


  1. Add all your ingredients to your blender
  2. Blitz away until you have a delicious concoction
  3. Enjoy!

I freeze my bananas to make the drink cold and saves on having to make ice blocks!

Psyllium is the key ingredient in my opinion (as far as a cure for heart burn) as it keeps you regular. I have come to the belief that not being “regular” was a major cause of the heart burn.

I have the smoothie as the first “meal” of the day around 10:30am after intermittent fasting for around 15 or 16 hours.
